The Philosophers’ Dreams
2009
Silk embroidery thread and pillows.
For years women have been embroidering quotes on pillowcases and wall hangings. The quotes in Wren’s The Philosophers’ Dreams are about aesthetics – from Heidegger’s “The Origins of Work of Art” to Bachelard’s “Poetics of Space” and convey universal truths that philosophers have been writing about for centuries. This is the contemporary woman’s pillowcase – machine embroidered, citing original sources, and then critiquing art itself. Like the doublespeak of philosophy, Wren makes art about the philosophy of making art.
